Guide for business owners

How to get found online in Rapid City

To get found online, claim your free Google, Bing and Apple listings, keep your business facts the same everywhere, ask every customer for a review, and make your website plain and easy to read. None of it costs money. It takes a few hours to set up and a few minutes a week after that.

In three steps

  1. Claim your listings

Start with your Google Business Profile. Then claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. All three are free.

  2. Make your facts match

Use the same name, address or service area, phone, hours and website on every listing and on your own site.

  3. Keep it fresh

Ask every customer for a review, reply to the reviews you get, and update your hours and photos when things change.

Where do people look for a local business?

People still ask friends where to go. More and more, they also ask their phone. That can mean Google Search, Google Maps, Apple Maps on an iPhone, Bing, or an AI app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.

These tools can only share what they can find about you. Many of them also borrow facts from each other, so a wrong phone number in one place can spread to others. The good news is that the fixes are the same for all of them.

What should I do first?

Claim and finish your Google Business Profile. It is the box with your hours, phone, map and reviews that shows up when someone searches for you, and it feeds Google Maps. Read the Google Business Profile basics.

Then claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Bing powers more than Bing.com, and Apple Business Connect is how your details reach Apple Maps and Siri on iPhones.

Why do my facts need to match everywhere?

When your name, address and phone are the same on every site, it is easy for search engines and AI apps to tell that all those listings are you. When they differ, customers can end up calling an old number or driving to an old address. See how to keep your facts the same everywhere.

Do reviews really matter?

Yes. People read them before they visit, and Google says the number of reviews and your rating are part of how it ranks local results. The right way to get more is simple: ask every customer, make it one tap, and reply. Read how to get more Google reviews the right way.

What about ChatGPT and other AI apps?

AI apps answer questions about local businesses using what they find on the web: your listings, your website, your reviews, and other sites that mention you. You can't edit what they say directly, but you can fix the sources they read. See what AI apps read about your business.

Do I need a website?

It helps a lot, and it doesn't need to be fancy. A plain site that loads fast on a phone and says what you do, where, and when you're open does most of the work. Read how to make your website easy to find.

How long until it works?

The setup takes a few hours. Changes on Google, Bing and Apple can take a few days to a few weeks to show. After that, it's a few minutes a week: a reply to a review, a new photo, holiday hours.

Nobody can promise you a spot at the top of Google or Maps. Google says so too. Be careful of anyone who does.

Is there a checklist I can print?

Yes. Getting found is a one-page checklist of the seven things only an owner can do, with the steps for each. It takes about an hour in total.

How does Hypher fit in?

Hypher is software for locally owned businesses in Rapid City. Each member gets a Hypher page that search engines and AI apps can read, and customers find members through the other local businesses in the network. It works alongside your Google listing, not instead of it. See what members get.

Questions people ask

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Google doesn't charge to create, verify or manage a Business Profile. Bing Places and Apple Business Connect are free too.

Can I get listed without a storefront?

Yes. If you go to your customers, like a plumber or a photographer, Google lets you hide your address and show the areas you serve instead.

Should I pay someone to get me to the top of Google?

No one can promise a spot on Google or Maps, and Google says so in its own help pages. Paying for help with setup can be fine. Paying for a promised rank is not.

How often should I update my listings?

Any time something changes, like your hours, phone or address, and before every holiday. A new photo or a reply to a review now and then also shows your listing is looked after.

This guide is general advice, not a promise of results. Google, Bing, Apple and the AI apps change how they work often. If something here looks out of date, tell us.
